Water projects clean up at Wellington Wairarapa Awards

10 Jun 2021

The CCNZ Wellington Wairarapa Branch Awards were held at Te Marae in Te Papa Tongarewa - the Museum of New Zealand on Saturday 29 May. The awards were attended by more than 200 people from across the region's civil construction industry, to celebrate success and enjoy the entertainment and presentations.

CCNZ Wellington Wairarapa Branch Chair Noel Sulzberger said the evening had been a great event enjoyed by all who attended, and congratulated the finalists on their skill and dedication to their work.

“The variety of the projects nominated for awards and the challenging environments the projects were undertaken in is testimony to the high level of skill within the Wellington-Wairarapa Branch."

Juno Civil won the award for Projects under $600,000 for its Orongorongo Footbridge Replacements, constructed to provide access deep within Rimutaka Forest Park. The project involved demolition and replacement of footbridges around an hour's drive up the steep-sided river valley to provide access for the walkway.

Extensive logistical planning was needed for the project, which also needed a lot of equipment transfer by hand, and much of the work was conducted in wilderness conditions with steep abseil access.

Managing Director and CCNZ Past President Jim Juno congratulated his staff and the project engineers from WSP for their time, effort and work on the successful project.

"I'd like to thank our staff, who did all the hard work. Got up early in the morning. Travelled in there, worked through as soon as we could after COVID, with all the restrictions we had."

The award for projects between $600,000 and $2,000,000 was closely contested. E.N. Ramsbottom Contractors for the Moa Point Interceptor Rehabilitation - Bypass Pumping, which required design for a sewerage system bypass that needed to cope with incredible amounts of sewage - an average flow of 1200 litres per second (or 4,000 litres per second in the rain). During the project more than one billion litres of sewage was pumped.

Despite the close contest, Construction Contracts Limited won the award category for its Queen Street Stormwater and Wastewater Renewals project on Mount Victoria. The stormwater had to be tied into an existing brick culvert that was more than four metres underground, beside a busy bus lane in a residential area, and was completed successfully, overcoming complex site management challenges.

The award for projects over $2,000,000 was presented to Brian Perry Civil for its Mount Albert Sludge Pipeline Repair, a $7.6m emergency repair project in response to a failure in the city's sewerage network that connected Wellington city to the Moa Point Sewage treatment plant.

The project included significant community engagement, custom design and development of a special liner that was inflated inside the pipe, as 50 lineal metres of pipeline and damaged concrete pipeline were repaired and replaced. The project also won the John Carson Memorial Award for Health and Safety, as the work was completed in the midst of pandemic level four lockdown, in confined and unsanitary spaces, without accident or injury to any staff.

Project Manager Daniel Doyle thanked the project engineers and his team on their successful completion of a challenging and time critical job.

"Big thanks to Wellington Water. Obviously it was a very high risk and difficult project. You placed your faith in us and it went really well."

Brian Perry Civil swept the award category, also winning a Merit Award for its Days Bay Wharf Repair and Refurbishment project.

The other awards presented at the awards evening were the Hynds Pipe Systems Contractor Image Award, which was presented to Goodman Contractors, and the 2021 CCNZ Wellington Wairarapa Associate Member of the Year Award, which went to Hynds Pipe Systems.

The event MC Greg Ward regaled the crowd with three songs, and the Branch also hosted a charity auction, raising more than $6,000 for Wellington Free Ambulance in memory of Life Member Rick Goodman, who passed away earlier in the month.
